Story Origins:
After the shenanigans I had with A Stranger in the Village and The Judgement of a Child – my first books that were always liable to revisions and new editions – I had absolutely no intention of writing a straight sequel to The Woman Who Loves. As far as I was concerned, Lily Blackwood’s story had reached its natural conclusion.
She had travelled to Ireland, uncovered the truth about her family, survived everything that had been thrown at her, and returned safely to Dorset. I closed the manuscript feeling satisfied that I had completed my first novel set almost entirely outside my own experience.
Before publication, however, all my stories are read by a small review team of friends. They know that I value honesty above politeness, and they have never been afraid to tell me when something doesn’t work.
This time, their reaction caught me completely by surprise.
‘What happens next?’
‘Nothing,’ I replied. ‘Lily’s home, and there she’ll stay.’
‘But what about the Murdoch family?’ one of them asked. ‘Won’t they want revenge?’
It was such a simple question, yet I had no answer.
What they had recognised, and I had overlooked, was that actions have consequences. The Murdoch family had lost its patriarch during the events of the first book. Lily hadn’t been responsible for his death, but that would make little difference to people looking for someone to blame. If the Murdochs were believable enough to threaten her once, they were believable enough to come looking for revenge.
I still resisted the idea of another novel. At most, I thought I might write a short concluding section of no more than fifty pages and attach it to the end of The Woman Who Loves.
It didn’t happen.
Fifty pages became a hundred. A postscript became a story. Before I realised what was happening, Secrets and Shadows had become a novel in its own right.
Looking back, I think the greatest surprise was not the return of the Murdoch family but the discovery of Lily herself. Faced with danger for a second time, she revealed qualities that had only been hinted at before. Her kindness remained, and so did her courage, her loyalty, and an inner toughness that perhaps she had inherited from her grandmother.
I thought I had finished Lily’s story.
Fortunately, she disagreed.

Ford delivers vivid descriptions of places, people and events, transporting the reader to Ireland, into the lives of the people of the County Cork fishing village of Kinsale, and into the minds of those who are compelled by circumstance to defend themselves or others they care about, or just to seek justice where the system has failed. Ford is a master of blending descriptions of beautiful places and people with thrilling scenes of deception, betrayal and brutality.
Secrets and Shadows: The Woman Who Loves – Part 2 is a dark thriller. It’s a gripping tale of crime, betrayal, and family secrets, but also a rich story of inheritance, identity, and bravery. It features strong female characters who come to life in the minds of readers, and rich themes of love, loyalty, responsibility, revenge, justice, healing, the importance of truth and the kindness of neighbours. Like The Woman Who Loves, Secrets and Shadows is a great read – possibly more enjoyable if you have read Book 1, but quite capable of standing alone. K.S. Ford is a talented writer and a master of the psychological fiction genre.
